The Canterbury Prologue

The Canterbury prologue is the beginning of the Canterbury tales and Chaucer is basically introducing the characters. The quote " When that Aprill with his shoures soote......." He introducing the idea that this pilgrimage is happening in the season of spring. I believe that with this quote which is found entirely on page 6 in the Norton Anthology Reading Chaucer, introduces the idea of newness because usually most people interpreting is that spring is new. The characters in this story is on a pilgrimage, so are they trying to renew themselves, during the season of renewal? possibly.
The genre and structure (after i researched it) of this story is frame narrative or frame tale. Basically that is a narrative technique where an introductory main story is composed, at least in part, for the purpose of setting the stage for a fictive narrative or organizing a set of shorter stories, each of which is a story within a story. The frame story leads readers from the first story into the smaller one within it.(Webster's Dictionary).
While the structure of the Tales is largely linear (google, the background of The Canterbury Tales), with one story following another, it is also much more than that. In the General Prologue, Chaucer describes, not the tales to be told, but the people who will tell them, making it clear that structure will depend on the characters rather than a general theme or moral. This idea is reinforced when the Miller interrupts to tell his tale after the Knight has finished his. Having the Knight go first, gives one the idea that all will tell their stories by class, with the Knight going first, followed by the Monk, but the Miller's interruption makes it clear that this structure will be abandoned in favor of a free and open exchange of stories between all the characters in the story.
I believe with all these different characters that are on this pilgrimage, that Chaucer is trying to convey the idea that there can be many different people with various backgrounds that can unite and focus on one goal. That's just like society today in many ways.
